Five things to look out for when West Ham face Bournemouth!

1. Cherries keeping it short

No team outside the top six passes the ball short more often AFC Bournemouth, who average 315 short passes per match of the 430 they make overall.

Eddie Howe’s players pass the ball short – less than 25 yards – 74 per cent of the time.

That number represents the seventh-highest rate in the Premier League behind Manchester City (85 per cent), Chelsea (84), Liverpool and Arsenal (both 79),
Tottenham Hotspur (78) and Manchester United (77).

For reference, West Ham pass the ball short 71 per cent of the time, on average, with 296 short passes out of 418 in total.

2. Goals galore

In seven Premier League meetings between West Ham United and AFC Bournemouth, the two clubs have shared 28 goals at an average of four goals per game.

Both the Hammers and the Cherries have netted 14 times each and, with Manuel Pellegrini and Eddie Howe both attack-minded managers, one can reasonably expect there to be plenty of opportunities for goals at both ends of the pitch this afternoon.

3. Callum Wilson

Callum Wilson enjoys playing against West Ham United.

AFC Bournemouth’s England international striker has scored five goals in five career appearances against the Hammers, including a hat-trick in the Cherries’ 4-3 Premier League win at the Boleyn Ground in August 2015.

The 26-year-old also bagged a controversial last-minute equaliser at the Vitality Stadium on Boxing Day 2017 and scored the equaliser as Bournemouth came from behind to win at London Stadium earlier this season.

4. Small but perfectly formed...

AFC Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium is the smallest venue in the history of the Premier League.

With a capacity of 11,360, the ground has a capacity of around 1,500 less than the second-smallest, Oldham Athletic’s Boundary Park, which hosted top-flight football between 1992-94.

Swindon Town’s County Ground, Southampton’s former home at The Dell, Blackpool’s Bloomfield Road, Derby County’s old Baseball Ground and Queens Park Rangers’ Loftus Road are the only other stadia in Premier League history with capacities of under 20,000.

5. Junior Stanislas

Academy of Football graduate Junior Stanislas has enjoyed a fine career.

The attacking midfielder came through the ranks at West Ham United before scoring eight goals in 47 appearances between 2008-11 and earning England U21 international honours.

The south London-born player spent three seasons at Burnley before moving to AFC Bournemouth in 2014.

Since then, the 29-year-old has scored 22 goals and assisted 15 more in 106 appearances for the Cherries, winning promotion to the Premier League in 2015 and re-establishing himself as a top-flight player over the past three-and-a-half seasons.

Jack Wilshere set for West Ham return in two weeks

Jack Rosser

Manuel Pellegrini has revealed that he expects Jack Wilshere to be available for selection in two weeks.

The injury-hit midfielder, who joined West Ham from Arsenal on a free transfer in the summer, has not featured since a five minute cameo against Newcastle on December 1, before which his last appearance was September 1, due to an ankle injury carrying over from his time in north London and has suffered subsequent setbacks since.

Pellegrini, though, who builds his teams around ‘technical’ players such as Wilshere, expects the 27-year-old to be back in the fold early next month.

West Ham have battled against a host of midfield injuries this season with Manuel Lanzini having been absent since the summer while Jack Wilshere and Carlos Sanchez, who is out for the season, have endured lengthy layoffs. Samir Nasri was added to the squad after completing an 18-month Anti-Doping ban and has looked lively in his first two outings.

On Wilshere’s recovery, Pellegrini said: “He is continuing with his six weeks of rest about his ankle.

“He is in treatment and I hope that next week maybe he can start making some running, on the treadmill or the other gym.

“Will he play again this season? Yes, yes of course. He will be ready the beginning of February.”

Wilshere has made just five appearances for West Ham since his summer move and the Hammers have lost each of the four games he started.
